Our program offers a comprehensive range of cross-platform subjects, allowing you to broaden your skills and knowledge in mobile app development. You’ll learn to create complex software applications across a range of mobile and web platforms, and gain the expertise to test, debug, and refine your app development for the marketplace.

In today’s fast-paced world, the app development industry is rapidly moving towards online work environments. That’s why we’re committed to preparing our students to excel in various settings, whether it’s in-person or remote.

Our classes are conveniently condensed into two days a week, giving you the flexibility to manage your time and balance your other commitments. However, we also believe in empowering you to take ownership of your learning journey. We’ll provide you with guidance and mentorship as you continue to build your mobile app development skills in the classroom for two-thirds of the week. This structure is dependent on you staying on track with your original study plan, which will help you stay organised and complete your projects on time.

Year 1 - Learn

Analyse the theories and applications information systems have for business solutions and explore the technology aspect of information systems including how to fully develop one.

Our course is designed to teach you the conceptualisation and techniques you need to succeed in mobile app development. Our expert teachers will guide you through the process of designing and implementing algorithms as computer programs using a high-level programming language. You’ll learn important techniques like debugging and testing to ensure that your programs run smoothly. We’ll also teach you the basic design elements of programming and how to construct solutions using specifications. With these skills, you’ll be able to create efficient, effective mobile apps that meet the needs of users and businesses alike.

This subject contains the knowledge and skills required for understanding fundamental programming. During the subject, you will learn how to apply programming concepts, basic variables, constants, and functions to build small programs. The information covered in this subject is essential for programmers at all levels.

An introduction to basic concepts and principles of database systems to emphasise the importance of a well-designed database in practice. Learn how data is structured and managed within a relational database. Learn the critical steps to design conceptual and relational models and implement these using basic DDL-SQL commands. Basic and advanced DML-SQL commands are also presented to enable retrieving accurate information from the database.

Gain the skills and knowledge needed to design sound-structured computer programs and move into a detailed examination of object-oriented analysis and design using the Unified Modelling Language (UML). You will also develop an understanding of the concepts and application of UML to software development, and will have opportunities to use UML for software creation while developing further understanding of software concepts and problem-solving approaches. The role of software engineer and the software development lifecycle will also be covered.

An introduction to a wide range of terminology and tools that have a particular use in computer science. The emphasis is placed on reasoned arguments and clarity of exposition as well as algebraic and computational skills. Topics covered in this unit include SetsMathematical InductionBig O NotationLogicPredicate CalculusGraphsLinear Recurrence RelationsSorting MethodsRelations, and Partial Ordering.

For this subject, you will choose a foundational elective from the approved elective list below. Electives are subject to availability, and certain electives have prerequisites.

Year 2 - Explore

Advance your programming skills and learn to create classes to build object-oriented programs. During this subject you will further the knowledge you gained in Programming I to focus on objects and interfaces, basic structures, special member functions, declarations and statements, standard libraries, and exception handling.

Learn the critical ICT skill of systems analysis and design. The objectives are to establish requirement analysis and design templates where more detailed material regarding specific aspects of requirements and design techniques and issues fit. In doing so you will apply your skills and knowledge of understanding requirements, a range of modelling techniques, methodologies, and approaches.

This subject teaches you how to design, implement, and evaluate user interfaces to meet predefined quality characteristics of functionality. You will also learn to create a user-centric experience for web and application design. Concepts, theories, and technologies underlying the methods and techniques are introduced and explained. You will apply all that you have learnt to develop and implement interactive user interfaces for systems, applications, products, or services.

This subject continues the examination of object-oriented programming using Java. It also introduces graphical user interface development using Java. You will learn the fundamental principles of interface development and are then required to apply these in the development of a program with a graphical interface.

This subject also examines database connectivity and network application development using Java.

Learn the basic principles of project management – including how to manage projects for delivery on time, on budget, and on quality.

An introduction to the basic concepts and operations of networks. The focus is on the network technologies and protocols, including the TCP/IP and OSI network layers, transmission, access networks, internet, data networks (LANs, wireless LANs, WANs, etc.), network security, and management.

An introduction to current enterprise computing concepts – including the main components of the enterprise computing environment, such as client/server relationships and component-based and service-based oriented architectures. The subject also enables you to appreciate and understand the differences between the various cloud platforms.

Learn basic theory, technologies, and design principles for mobile application development. Topics include: Introduction to Android ProgrammingAndroid Development Tools (Android Studio), and Basic Layout and Interface for Mobile and Tablet.

Year 3 - Launch

This subject provides you with more advanced skills in developing websites in HTML5, XHTML, and CSS. You will apply your skills to: creating a complex website structure; using naming conventions; manipulating images for the internet; writing basic web pages using tables and divs; providing navigation and creating interactive, functioning websites. You must include more complex features of HTML5 (e.g. canvas). You are required to use jQuery Mobile development framework and PHP for all site development.

Learn advanced technologies, applications, and effective user interface for iOS mobile. Topics include Mobile Application FrameworkPattern and Human Interface Design, and App Design and Store.

You will learn to identify the programming, framework, and environmental options that are available for developers and develop a cross-platform application of your own that can be deployed across a range of devices and platforms.

This subject is the first part of a two-term project. It aims to prepare you for career roles in a particular ICT discipline or focus area. You will select a topic of interest and will work individually (recommended) or within a team of two or three, with supervision. You will be required to apply knowledge obtained from subjects delivered in the first two years in order to deliver satisfactory outcomes for this final Advanced Studio project.

In Advanced Studio 1, you will consult with your supervisor to finalise your topic, develop a methodology, plan your milestones for both trimesters, and complete your research, literature review, analysis, and high-level design phases of the project.

For this subject you will choose your second elective from the approved elective subject list below. Electives are subject to availability, and certain electives have prerequisites.

This subject introduces data-driven programming, which is a programming model where data self-controls the application flow. It expands on your application development skills, especially backend application development. This subject specifically addresses the technical skills and business knowledge required to develop a simple data-driven mobile application. Topics include server-side development methodology, database connectivity, and basic APIs.

You will study information security issues and system security implementation and control to maintain information confidentiality, as well as the ability to protect data from unauthorised access through an application.

This subject allows you to work either individually or as a team on an actual outside project for a client. You will be assessed either as individuals or as team members as part of their team and based on the entire project.

Members of teams will, however, be responsible for the provision and completion of their own allocated task responsibilities within the project. The final assessment of the completed project will be in part based on feedback and input from the client.

This subject is the second part of a two-term project. You must successfully complete Advanced Studio 1 in order to enrol in this subject. In Advanced Studio 2, you will continue your project from Advanced Studio 1, and complete your project with low-level design, implementation, prototype, and final presentation according to a timeline and plan as set in Advanced Studio 1.

The whole project encourages you to properly complete a project following industry processes, standards, and disciplines in order to prepare for career roles in your focus area.

The IT Professional

This subject will introduce you to the skills and qualities needed to be effective within an ICT team. During the subject, you’ll develop interpersonal skills demanded in an organisational setting, techniques for communicating, managing feedback, and even understanding the need for self-care. It will be the foundation upon which you develop professional capabilities and engage in relevant activities to sustain continued growth as an IT professional.

Professional Practice and Ethics

Ethics are important, particularly in the age of artificial intelligence and mass-user reach. So, this subject addresses the core tenets of professional practice as it relates to the ethical responsibilities and expectations placed on IT professionals. Throughout PP&E, you will learn to consider and respond to a range of ethical dilemmas that can impact individuals, organisations, or society at large.

Foundations of Information Security

More than any other time in history, information security is at a premium, and IT professionals are expected to be gatekeepers for the mass amounts of data society needs to protect. So, in this subject, you’ll explore the security principles of confidentiality, integrity, and availability (CIA), in computer systems and networks, along with concepts of identification, authentication and authorisation, system security, access control, and identity management. Building on this, you will learn security compliance, database security, threat management, and attack models to ensure you are aware of how to secure IT systems and protect against the threat of unwanted breaches.

Business Analytics

Gain a critical understanding of the business analytics in organisational environments to empower and inform decision-making and ultimately gain a competitive advantage. With vast amounts of data at the disposal of modern organisations, having the knowledge and skills to wrangle and translate data into information that is useful in business intelligence is a valued capability for an IT professional. This subject explores fundamental business problems that can be solved by applying the process of analytics, providing students with an in-depth understanding of statistical methods (quantitative analysis), and explanatory and predictive modelling techniques used by business analysts.

Artificial Intelligence

This subject will introduce you to the concept of artificial intelligence (AI) – one of the critical components in a contemporary game development project. You will develop a solid grasp of what the term “artificial” means. Artificial intelligence will be used to produce gaming problems and solutions and to construct player challenges. Through a personal research project, you will engage in scientific writing and experimental analysis, investigating AI both theoretically and technically.

Augmented Reality

In this subject you will be introduced to the theory and practice of augmented reality (AR). You will study the history of augmented reality technology and consider its practical applications in a contemporary context. The subject will cover processes for AR development for game programming, and you will engage in practical exercises for developing your own working augmented reality applications.

The Professional Internship Program

Get placed in a professional industry organisation where you will develop relevant skills oriented toward your chosen career. It will provide you with an opportunity to apply what you know, be mentored, receive feedback, and seek opportunities for development in a real-world setting, as well as be exposed to emerging trends and technology impacting your industry. Prior to commencement of the internship, AIT will determine a suitable placement company based on your individual needs and interests.

Image Design

You will gain a solid foundation in the technical tools and design skills needed to create and manipulate digital images. You will be introduced to image editing software and then move on to develop moving image editing techniques, exploring and applying theories of film editing. This will include layering and transparencies, title design, timing and rhythm in editing, colour correction, and applying masks and filters to images. Both photographic and filmic skills will be applied to the development of a portfolio. Image copyright law will also be considered and applied to student work.

Motion Design

Motion design, or motion graphics, is an ever-increasing presence in online communication. This subject will provide you with the tools and techniques to design and construct effective motion graphic communications. You will deconstruct logos, build 2D objects and characters, and animate them using industry-standard software. Graphic design principles and typography design concepts will be explored and applied to text motion, motion tracking, and frame composition. You will learn to design title sequences and their place in the production process.

Game Design Mechanics

In this subject, you will be introduced to game theory, genre, history, and context. You will research and report on the nature of the game industry and analyse the mechanics of game design. Critically review case studies on a variety of game mechanics, including games programming, with gameplay taking a leading role in discovering several classes of games, their structures, and characteristics.

Game Scripting

In this elective path, you will be introduced to the core concepts and fundamentals of game scripting. This will involve acquiring fundamental knowledge of game-specific programming languages, understanding data types and how to manipulate them with functions and variables, using those languages, and an understanding of scripting game design logic. You will build game functionality and learn how to create games within the game engine; an essential skill for game designers to master in the creative industries after successful completion of the bachelor degree.

2D Animation Mechanics

Acquire the skills for creating both simple and sophisticated animations. The principles of animation will be examined in greater detail, and the methods used to develop animation through keyframing, tweening, and frame-by-frame animation will be used in the creation of short animations. Animation development software will be implemented, and you will experiment with animation on paths, walk cycles, and sound for animation. The 2D animation process requires animators to continually seek feedback and adapt and refine their work in response, which will be applied over the duration of this subject.

3D Character Lab

Learn the entire 3D workflow (pipeline) required to create your own uniquely designed 3D animation characters during the bachelor degree. The creative media areas covered include props and background development, using industry-standard 3D software, 3D interface navigation, fundamental 3D theory, character design, modelling, texturing, lighting, skinning, camera animation, and rendering. These skills will provide a firm foundation for creating 3D objects and characters.
